Along with many unique pieces, you’ll also see and hear many talented guests. In addition to such classic band works as Chance’s Symphony No. 2 and Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, you will also hear the world premiere of the MWS’ latest commissioning project. Conductor Lewis Buckley is writing a piece to honor two important contributors to MWS’ music-making over the years, former Assistant Conductor Robert Franzblau and current Associate Conductor James O’Dell. Buckley is writing a work for solo trumpet (Franzblau’s instrument) and tuba (O’Dell’s instrument) with concert band. Franzblau will conduct the work, O’Dell will perform the tuba solo, and Boston area trumpet virtuoso Joseph Foley will be the trumpet soloist. Finally, students of the music educators in MWS will join us for the second half of the concert, which will close with Respighi’s immensely powerful Pines of the Appian Way.
