We will open with a delightful wind setting of Offenbach's Orpheus Overture, followed by John Paynter's marvelous transcription of Malcom Arnold's Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo, one of the most often-performed wind works of the last century. Hanssen's famous Valdres March then leads us into one of the great 20th Century masterworks, Ingolf Dahl's Sinfonietta. It is one of the MWS members' favorite pieces, and one of mine as well. As a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, I was privileged to participate in the Eastern Premiere of the Sinfonietta, under the baton of Dr. Donald Hunsberger.
In the second half of this concert, we will be joined by select student musicians from some of the schools in which our members teach. We will open this half with Holst's classic Second Suite in F, followed by another piece high on our list of Members' Favorites, John Barnes Chance's Incantation and Dance.
