| Notes | Baritone soloist at premiere, the composer, Stanley M. Hoffman. The premiered section, "Kumee Lach," is approximately 5 minutes in duration. The entire work (which awaits a full performance) is approximately 15 minutes in duration. |
| Composer's Program Notes | Selections from "The Song of Songs" is dedicated to my wife, Ruth. It is a wedding gift. This composition consists of three interconnected songs with mostly different source texts. The first song is in Hebrew, the second song is in Yiddish and the third song is in English. The musical language is tonal, but tonic-dominant cadences are replaced by modal cadences often involving minor dominant chords. The music always maintains a lyrical quality. I have long been interested in the expressive possibilities of the wind symphony. The number of pieces for wind ensemble and voice, though relatively small, is on the rise. I am pleased to contribute a new work to this genre. |
