Winter Concert: Metamorphosis in Music

For the first time in Lew’s 11 seasons on our podium, he will take a one-concert sabbatical. In his place, we will welcome Avi Mehta, a talented, young conductor steeped in the El Sistema tradition of using music education to effect social change. For the program, he has chosen music that has been “morphed” in some form for the concert band. The performance will open with a symphonic fanfare by Venezuelan composer Gioncarlo Castra D’Adonna, which was originally written for brass ensemble and later transcribed for band. Next, we will feature two works originally written for keyboard instruments: Prelude in a Dorian Mode, a fugal, organ work from the mid-1500’s and Turina’s Miniatures, a set of five, short pieces originally written for piano in 1930. The final piece of the first half will be James Barnes’ exciting orchestration of Paganini’s violin caprice featuring each section of the band. The second half will be comprised of two orchestral masterpieces: Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, and Hindemith’s large masterwork, Symphonic Metamorphosis, a quasi-symphony based on themes by Carl Maria von Weber. The March movement is ofte-played, but this is a rare opportunity to hear the entire work, so you won’t want to miss it.
